Moisturising – Step 3 to a beautiful skin

Skin gets dry – and that’s why applying a moisturiser in the morning and evening on clean skin is a basic part of your skin-care routine. But treating dry skin is not the only reason why we use creams and lotions.

Moisturising adds a layer of protection to the skin’s surface. A creamy blend of water and oil, a moisturiser is one of the most effective ways to minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Skin appears smoother and fresher when the surface cells are plumped by with water. That’s why hyaluronic acid, which holds 1 000 times its weight in water, is so effective (find it in our Advantage Triple-Action Serum). Wait a few minutes for moisturiser to be absorbed and you have the perfect canvas for makeup that lasts longer and doesn’t crease.

In the long term, skipping moisturiser can lead to deeper wrinkles and prematurely sagging skin. When skin is dry the barrier layer that protects it is compromised and, say dermatologists, this can lead to chronic low-grade inflammation, the breakdown of collagen and accelerated ageing. With antioxidants and nourishing vitamins, plus SPF protection, moisturiser helps the skin repair its natural barrier, boosting protection and preventing moisture loss.

In dry climates, and especially in winter in the cold inland provinces, humidity levels decrease. Dry and overheated air can quickly strip the natural moisture from the skin, causing redness and flaking. It’s not only dry skin that needs moisturising – oily skins prone to blemishes and acne can also dry out, further encouraging redness, irritation and flaking. While the salicylic acid is an excellent spot-buster in our Purifying range, we recommend applying Dual-Action Moisturiser twice daily to help prevent dryness and keep skin feeling smooth and comfortable.

So, no matter what your age or skin type, moisturiser is your skin’s best friend. Apply a moisturising day cream in the morning (with SPF) and a nourishing cream at night to help repair daily damage and boost cell regeneration. There’s no quick-fix, warn skin experts, but a daily cleanse, tone and moisturiser routine will set you on the path to a lifetime of beautiful skin.
